About Podiatry

Podiatry is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and medical, surgical, mechanical, physical and adjunctive treatment of the diseases, injuries and defects of the foot and ankle. Podiatrists are specialists who diagnose and treat disorders and diseases of the foot and related areas, including the ankle, heel and toes. According to the APMA, podiatrists are often the first to identify patients' systemic diseases, such as diabetes and the associated complications, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Podiatrists do all of the following:

  • Perform Complete Medical Histories and Physical Examinations
  • Take and Interpret X-Rays and Other Imaging Studies
  • Work as Valued Members of a Community's Health Care Team
  • Order and Perform Physical Therapy
  • Prescribe and Fit Orthotics, Insoles and Custom-Made Shoes
  • Set Fractures and Treat Sports-Related Injuries
  • Prescribe Drugs
  • Perform Surgery
